The Birla Institute of Technology & Science, BITS Pilani is an all-India Institute for higher education. The primary motive of BITS is to "train young men and women able and eager to create and put into action such ideas, methods, techniques and information". The Institute is a dream come true of its founder late Mr G.D.Birla - an eminent industrialist, a participant in Indian freedom struggle and a close associate of the Father of Indian Nation late Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi). What started in early 1900s as a small school, blossomed into a set of colleges for higher education, ranging from the Humanities to Engineering until 1964 when all these colleges amalgamated to culminate into a unique Indian University of International standing. This university was christened as the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, known to many as BITS, Pilani.

ver the years, BITS has provided the highest quality technical education to students from all over India admitted on the basis of merit. Its graduates may be found throughout the world in all areas of engineering, science and commerce. BITS symbolize the maturing of Indian technical ability and "can-do" entrepreneurial spirit, especially as derived from the private sector. BITS is located in the Vidya Vihar campus adjacent to the town of Pilani in Rajasthan.

Acceditation

• BITS has been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) with A grade with a CGPA of 3.71 on a four point scale.

Policy

• The pursuit of excellence requires a transparent and honest approach. At BITS Pilani, we have always believed this to be true and are one of the few top institutes in India to favour a ‘Merit Only’ based admission policy.

 

• To ensure complete transparency in student intake in the undergraduate courses we have instituted BITSAT, a fully online exam. BITSAT tests students on their aptitude for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. BITSAT also has a section on English and Logical reasoning, thus becoming a complete analysis of a candidate’s intelligence and capability.

 

• 1901 Seth ShivNarainji Birla starts a 'Patshala' in Pilani with one teacher for educating his grandsons, late Shri GD Birla and late Shri RD Birla.

 

IKA Cell

• BITS Pilani has grown steadily in last fifty years and is now a multi-campus university with over 11000 on-campus and over 21,000 off-campus students. Over the last 5 years, BITS Pilani has undertaken a spectrum of initiatives to drive excellence in both academic and non-academic areas. These initiatives are being carried out by a number of teams / individuals at various departments, divisions and units across campuses.

 

• Though these initiatives are yielding benefits, a need is felt to have a structured mechanism at university level to quantify these benefits. Unless we have correct, periodical, up-to-date data, we would find it difficult to measure and assess the benefits from any of these initiatives.

 

• Addressing the need to have timely, accurate and efficient data storage and access, the Institutional Knowledge and Analysis (IKA) Cell is being established under the leadership of Director, Special Projects. Key objectives of the IKA Cell would be as follows:

 

• Collect institutional data for various metrics identified as a part of University Dashboard
• Produce periodic research data analysis for the senior leadership for evidence based decision-making
• Fulfil mandatory reporting requirements of regulatory agencies
• Facilitate initiatives such as benchmarking, rankings, accreditation, etc.
• The availability of correct data at all times will further enable evidence-based decision making while implementing various institutional development plans. The IKA Cell would work and interface with the following:
